Kurapika’s Bullet Timing

hxh1

hxh2

hxh3

Kurapika shows us that he is a very casual bullet timer with this feat. Not only does he block each bullet, he does so with such precision that each link of his dousing chain catches them!

The truth, though, is that there is no way to get the full extent of this feat. At least two different men are firing at Kurapika, so I don’t know who is firing when. The best I can do is figure out how fast he’d need to move the chain to catch two consecutive shots from one guy.

First thing of note is that the gunmen are in the doorway downstairs while shooting. The doorway starts where the railing upstairs ends. We can see that after Kurapika blocks the bullets, he jumps straight up and onto a railing.

hxh4

We can see that Kurapika lands 4 rails over. With this we can get our distance between Kurapika and the gunmen.

kurapika4

I will be assuming that the swordsman is an average Japanese male height of 1.70 m. He measures 76 pixels here compared to 72 for distance between the wall and where Kurapika previously was.

72 / 76 = .947 * 1.70 = 1.61 m, distance between Kurapika and gunmen.

As mentioned before, Kurapika landed where the fourth rail was, so I measured from there.

kurapika2

Kurapika is 1.71 m tall. He’s 369 pixels here compared to his head height at 57.

57 / 369 = .155 * 1.71 = .265 m, height of Kurapika’s head.

kurapika3

Kurapika’s head measures at 65 pixels compared to 92 for the dousing chain. His arm is 108 pixels long.

92 / 65 = 1.415 * .265 = .375 m, length of dousing chain.

108 / 65 = 1.662 * .265 = .44 m, length of Kurapika’s arm.

After looking into things, with a pistol, the firing rate is too low to factor in to a calculation. The world’s fastest shooter can shoot a revolver bullet every .57 s. In that amount of time, a Glock 17 with a muzzle velocity of 375 m/s would have already reached over 200 m away, whereas Kurapika isn’t even 2 m away. lol

So the best I can do here is calculate the speed required of his chain to block one bullet at a time. One of his swings appears to be a 1/3rd circular motion diagonally, while the other is entirely across his body in what appears to be a half-circle. I wouldn’t consider this a “range”, though. Rather, these are two different swings with two different speeds.

With a 375 m/s muzzle velocity, we can get a time frame with the distance.

1.61 / 375 = .0043 s, time frame.

Combining the length of Kurapika’s arm with the dousing chain length (.815 m), we can get the radius for our circle.

The diagonal swing would have a total distance traveled of 1.705 m.

1.705 / .0043 = 396.512 m/s, or Mach 1.17.

The cross body swing would have a total distance traveled of 2.561 m.

2.561 / .0043 = 595.581 m/s, or Mach 1.75.

Ubogin Eats a Bullet

hxh1

hxh2

Ubogin makes a joke of the mafia by catching a bullet in his teeth when the gun barrel is right in his face. Basically, because he did this so casually, I can get a pretty reasonable estimate.

I’m going to use Glock 17 as reference once again.

ubo1

A Glock 17 is .204 m in length. It measures 86 pixels compared to 17 for distance between barrel and Ubo’s mouth.

17 / 86 = .198 * .204 = .04 m, distance between end of barrel and Ubo’s mouth.

We have to account for the length of the gun barrel for a feat such as this, because we don’t see the bullet come out before Ubo reacts.

.04 + 2.04 = .208 m, distance.

Glock fires at 375 m/s, as shown before…

.208 / 375 = .00055 s, time frame.

With such a casual feat, it’s generally agreed upon that he could have moved 1 m during that time.

1 / .00055 = 1,818.181 m/s, or Mach 5.35.

The 1 meter figure comes from the estimation that Ubo could have moved a meter during this time due to how casually he did this. However, I thought it might also be interesting to relate his mouth movement speed to his actual movement speed by using the mouth and movement speed of regular humans.

S for that same feat, he would have had to open, then close down his mouth to clench down on the bullet. This means we double the .04 m figure found earlier to .08 m.

.08 / .00055 = 145.455 m/s, speed of Ubo’s mouth.

Humans chew at 173 mm/s. The average man runs at a speed of 13.62 kph or 3.783 m/s.

3.782 / .173 = 21.861, how many times faster a man can run than chew food on average.

21.861 * 145.455 = 3,179.792 m/s or Mach 9.35.

I know the method is a little weird; that’s why I chose to give a range. But those are the only two ways we can say more than “Ubo reacted in this time.” and actually get a speed from this impressive feat. Which you choose to go by, if either at all, is not up to me!

Ubogin’s Big Bang Impact

hxh1

hxh2

Ubo’s Big Bang Impact makes a large crater in the ground.

ubo1

Ubo is 2.58 m tall. He’s 29 pixels here compared to the crater diameter at 184.

184 / 29 = 6.345 * 2.58 = 16.37 m, diameter of crater.

If we assume this to be a perfect half-sphere, the volume of destroyed rock would be 1,148.457 m^3.

1,148.457 m^3 = 1,148,457,000 cm^3

Cratering is 87 J/cc.

1,148,457,000 * 87 = 99,915,759,000 J, or 23.88 Tons of TNT.

Silva’s Explosive Orbs

hxh1

hxh2

Silva’s explosive orbs blow a large hole in the wall of skyscraper basement.

silva1

Chrollo is 1.77 m tall. He’s 113 pixels tall here compared to the height of the pillar at 477.

477 / 113 = 4.221 * 1.77 = 7.471 m, height of pillar.

silva2

The pillar measures at 354 pixels compared to 409 for diameter 1 and 499 for diameter 2. The thickness is 70 pixels.

409 / 354 = 1.155 * 7.471 = 8.629 m, diameter 1.

499 / 354 = 1.41 * 7.471 = 10.534 m, diameter 2.

70 / 354 = .198 * 7.471 = 1.479 m, thickness.

Treating this as an oval cylinder, the volume would be 105.587 m^3.

With the combination of burning, fragmentation, and some vapor, I will treat this as cratering, so 87 J/cc.

105.587 m^3 = 105,587,000 * 87 = 9,186,069,000 J, or 2.196 Tons of TNT.
